You could be working through the courses listed above while they are doing that so that you are ready to go. Or perhaps the middle ground is have them lay out the first book and provide the template and basic instructions, so that you can pick it up from there. When all is said and done, you may find it is easier just to hire a freelancer to do the jobs for you. (You won't need to watch all of David's course, but start at the beginning to build a solid foundation.) David Blatner has a excellent course on the basics: and his colleague Mike Rankin has one specifically on long document layout. If you are up for it but on a tight budget, sign up for LinkedIn Learning (you can get a one-month free trial, and a lot of local libraries offer free access) and start working through the courses. (Footnotes may present real challenges?)Īny comments and suggestions would be most welcome!Īs a career InDesign trainer (who does mostly long document layout work), I'd say it's a daunting task. So I am curious to know, will it be doable to learn to use Indesign for book formatting in a short amount of time (a month, say), for someone who has only basic computer skills? The books are all traditional, no graphics, text-only kind, though some of them have many footnotes. And I discovered at Youtube a tutorial for Indesign specifically for those wanting to use it for book formatting and the author of the tutorial was saying that one can learn to format books with Indesign in just an hour. Then I began to hear (read) good things about Indesign, how Word can never achieve the same level of finesse in end result, etc. I've heard of Indesign, but I feared it is meant only for professionals and just ruled it out of any consideration. I tried one of them, and, to my dismay, it was really very limited in its capacity. I learned that there are softwares, such as Vellum or Atticus that are designed to make formatting as painless and easy as possible. (I had only a vague notion of book formatting). I am preparing to self-publish a series of books and formatting has been a difficult issue to deal with.
